Astaxanthin is one of over 700 known natural carotenoids found in nature. Natural astaxanthin is derived from the green microalga Haematococcus pluvialis, which responds to stress caused by food or water shortages, intense sunlight, or extreme cold by producing this characteristic red natural pigment. Astaxanthin enters the bodies of animals and humans through the food chain and is responsible, for example, for the reddish coloration of crustaceans, lobsters, and salmon.
