NADH is present in every living cell of animals, humans, and plants and is found in many foods, particularly animal products. Organs with high energy demands—such as the heart, brain, and muscles—in particular have higher concentrations. The abbreviation NADH stands for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide in its reduced form; the “H” at the end therefore stands for hydrogen. This endogenous coenzyme is produced from the vitamin niacin. NADH is also often referred to as coenzyme 1.
