What is turmeric?
Turmeric is a tropical mountain plant native to India and Southeast Asia. Turmeric belongs to the ginger family. Since the early Middle Ages, turmeric has also been used in North Africa and Europe. The root tuber is used either fresh or dried.
Turmeric and the Body
Turmeric belongs to the class of antioxidants, such as vitamin E, carotene, and vitamin C. It neutralizes free radicals in the human body with a comparable effect.
Curcumin has powerful cholagogue, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antimutagenic effects. Curcumin supports the development of gut flora. The intestinal mucosa is the inner lining of the intestine. It contains glands that produce intestinal juice, specific enzymes that break down nutrients, cells that absorb nutrients from the intestine into the bloodstream, and cells that defend against pathogens. An intact intestinal mucosa is the foundation of the body’s immune system.
