Everything that tastes good...
What do red wine, sparkling wine, chocolate, strawberries, hard cheese, and smoked meat have in common? That’s right—they taste good, and it’s also true that they contain a lot of HISTAMINE. Many people have trouble digesting foods that contain histamine. Why? It has to do with the histamine-degrading enzyme diamine oxidase (DAO).
What You Should Know About DAO
Diamine oxidase (DAO) is produced primarily by the cells of the intestinal mucosa and breaks down extracellular (free) histamine. When DAO activity is reduced, histamine accumulates in the blood, leading to typical histamine reactions.
Signs of histamine intolerance
The list of possible signs of histamine intolerance is long. If you recognize one or more of these symptoms, it’s likely that you have trouble breaking down histamine:
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Fatigue, lack of motivation
- Insomnia
- Difficulty Concentrating
- Nervousness, tingling, inner restlessness
- Facial flushing after a meal (“flush”)
- stuffy nose

A Tip from the Naturopathic Practice
"Unfortunately, symptoms of histamine intolerance are common in our daily practice. Our treatment approach involves changing or adjusting dietary habits in combination with micronutrients that contain DAO-inhibiting or DAO-degrading substances."
"By the way, a very simple and quick remedy for histamine-related issues is high-dose vitamin C. Be sure to always choose Ester-C, which is gentle on the stomach, to prevent hyperacidity."
