Omega-3 fatty acids are among the so-called essential fatty acids: the body needs them but cannot produce them itself due to a lack of enzymes. They must therefore be obtained from food. Omega-3 fatty acids are found mainly in fish oil and seafood (mackerel, salmon and herring).
Evidence of the beneficial effects of a fish-rich diet was first provided by the observation that Eskimos, who feed mainly on fish, had a low rate of heart attacks. This brought omega-3 fatty acids to the forefront of medical interest; their beneficial effects on various organs were subsequently investigated and confirmed in numerous studies. The anti-inflammatory effect of omega-3 is particularly noteworthy.
